Mike Mills wrote this as a plea to his girlfriend not to leave Athens for her hometown of Rockville, Maryland. it was originally written as a punk song but R.E.M. decided to turn it into a country song as a joke while recording Reckoning. it ain’t my favorite R.E.M. song, but it’s pretty damn close.

The Piranhas “Cold Cold Metal”
one of the criminally overlooked punk bands of the late 90s/early 2000s, Detroit’s The Piranhas. sounding like a mix of Raw Power era Stooges, The Germs, The Mummies, and Crime, they created a violent caterwaul of garage punk noise. do yourself a favor and hunt down their records.
The Loved Ones “Sad Dark Eyes”
The Loved Ones were a mid 60’s Australian R&B band, heavily influenced by the British Invasion that sort of sound like a cross between the Walker Brothers and The Yardbirds. they were never really known outside of their country. “Sad Dark Eyes” is a mournful ballad that has been covered by Nick Cave (with the Bad Seeds & Birthday Party), Die Haut, Mick Harvey, and Ed Kuepper (whose version was the 1st i ever heard). it’s one of those perfect little rare gems from the 60s that you instantly fall in love with upon first listen.
